Sterry W. Copp Jr, 90, passed away peacefully on May 4, 2025, at Fred & Harriett Taylor Health Center, in Bath, New York. Born on March 27, 1935, in Wellsboro, Pennsylvania, Sterry lived a full and vibrant life marked by hard work, deep faith, and an unwavering love for family and community.
From a young age, Sterry demonstrated a strong work ethic that would define much of his life. He began working at the Corning Box Factory early on and continued through its transition to Weyerhaeuser. Sterry retired in the early 1980s following an accident at work but remained active and busy throughout retirement. He firmly believed there was always something to be done and rarely sat still—always tinkering, fixing, or creating.
Sterry was predeceased by his loving wife, Jeanne, of 45 years. Together they built a life rooted in love and shared values. Their legacy continues through their sons: Rodger (Cindy) of Wisconsin; William of Kentucky; and Matthew (Kate) of New York. Sterry was also a proud grandparent to Tyler, Dylan, Maty, Heath, Sarah, Laura, Chris, Alaina, Lily, Mason, and Wyatt—and a great-grandparent to twelve cherished great-grandchildren, along with several nieces and nephews. Sterry also leaves behind his beloved companion Teddy, his maltese poodle.
A person of deep faith, Sterry believed strongly in sharing his beliefs with others. He saw this as part of his calling and was always ready with words of encouragement or spiritual reflection for those around them.
Sterry’s passions were as wide-ranging as his stories were plentiful. He found joy in hunting and fishing—often returning with tales that grew larger over time. Old westerns played often in the background while he laughed with friends and family. Storytelling was second nature to Sterry; he had a gift for bringing people together through humor and heartfelt conversation.
Those who knew Sterry will remember him as a loving husband, father, grandfather, uncle, and friend—someone who checked in regularly just to see how you were doing. His heart was enormous, his laugh almost as big and his presence unforgettable.
May Sterry’s memory bring comfort to all who knew him and serve as a lasting reminder of a life well lived—full of purpose, laughter, faith, and love.
Calling hours will be held on Thursday, May 8th from 3:00–5:00 p.m. at Acly-Stover Funeral Home, 327 E 2nd St., Corning, NY. A private family service will be held on Friday at Shumway Hill Cemetery in Wellsboro, Pennsylvania.
