Shirley Callahan Obituary

Corning, NY - Shirley O. Callahan of Corning, passed away May 2, 2018. She was 87.

Shirley was born July 26, 1930, the daughter of Melvin Orr and Winona Orr.

Shirley is survived by brother Howard Orr of Seacrest Florida, sister Jeanette Orr of Shoreline Washington, daughters Lisa Sterling and her husband Joe of Pine City New York, Susan Callahan of Addison New York, Cherie Callahan of Corning New York and son Michael Callahan and his wife Mary of Lodi New York. She is also survived by her grandchildren William Sterling, Kadie Reese, Benjamin Sterling, Michael Carr, Skyler Callahan Miller and Devin Callahan Miller. She had 15 great grand children.

She is preceded in death by her husband Norman E Callahan.

Shirley was a graduate of Northside High School, attended Penn State and received a Bachelors degree from Elmira college. She taught elementary education after getting married to Norman E Callahan in 1952. Shirley and Norman started Ferenbaugh Campground in the early 60's where she worked and taught many young children to swim. After raising a family, Shirley went back to work as a drafts person for Corning Incorporated for six years and retired from Steuben County Real Property Tax where she worked for 25 years.

She loved going to concerts and particularly loved seeing Bob Dylan. She was a member of the Elmira Art Club and exhibited her paintings in many area shows. She won awards including the Elmira Regional Art Society Palette Award and the Betts Komer Memorial Purchase Award. She studied portrait and landscape painting with teacher and friend Thomas S Buechner for 25 years. She loved traveling to Paris, Rome, Moscow and London, visiting museums with her friends.

She was able to live out her days in her lovely home that she and her husband built in 1960. She was loved by her close knit family and so enjoyed getting together for dinners on all the holidays. She leaves behind many broken hearts. She will be buried beside her husband at the Oldfield Cemetery across from Ferenbaugh Campground.

The family will receive friends on Saturday, May 12, 2018 at Acly-Stover Funeral Home, 327 East Second Street, Corning from 2:00 - 3:30 pm. A Memorial Service will follow at 3:30 p.m.
