Lieutenant Colonel Gordon Albert Hakes (Gordie) age 88, of Painted Post NY, passed away on Sunday, March 10, 2024, at home.
Gordie was born on December 11, 1935, in Corning, NY. The son of the late George Jeremiah Hakes Sr. and Anna (DuVall) Hakes.
Gordie during his working career was the owner of the Painted Post CarMart for forty years, Gordie Hakes construction and Desert Fox Arabians. He was proud of being a part of the Village of Painted Post, these are some of the contributions that he made to the village after the flood of 72, he demolished most of the buildings which are considered the village square today he with the collaboration of Dr. David C. Schirmer DDS produced the first fluoride water treatment system in the state. Gordie helped to build the water sewer system in Painted Post and build the first Denny’s restaurant in the area. He never turned down anyone when they approached him for a contribution for a good cause, he was proud to sponsor the many different sports organizations during the years, one of the biggest accomplishments was being a part of building the Cowanesque Dam in Pennsylvania.
Gordie loved his country and served in the U.S. Army Reserves for over 30 years, retiring as a LT. Colonel.
Gordie was predeceased by his parents and siblings: William, Walter, Bernard, Raymond, George Jr. Hakes and Kathleen Sprague. Also, he is survived by many nieces and nephews and the love of his life, his horses and dog Ty. Surviving Mother of his daughter's, Gloria Hakes. His daughters Suzanne Whalen, Linda (John) Bailey, Theresa (James) Drumm, and Donna Hakes Cavallaro. Grandchildren Danielle (Craig) Roberts, Brian and Anthony Whalen, Chase and Dillon (Lexi) Bailey, Jamie and Natalie Drumm, Tony (Jenna) and Tylor Cavallaro. Great Grandchildren Corynn, Kira, Cullen, Ryder, and Renley. Gordie’s surviving siblings Marie Licciardello, Alton Hakes, Barbara Colclough and Larrie Hakes.
The family will receive friends at Acly-Stover Funeral Home on March 15, 2024, from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. Funeral services will follow at 6:00 p.m. with Pastor Kevin Austin officiating from Grace United Methodist Church, Corning. A graveside service with Military honors will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, March 16, 2024, at Chapel Knoll Cemetery, Painted Post, NY.
