John E. Armistead, age 79, of Horseheads, NY, died Friday, December 15, 2023, at Bethany Village in Horseheads. John was born on May 4, 1944, in Corning, NY, the son of William H. Armistead and Mary Gratzer Armistead.
John graduated from Corning Northside Blodgett High School. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps and was a decorated Vietnam Veteran of two tours. A much sought-after handyman, John read voraciously and enjoyed painting and writing poetry.
John was predeceased by his beloved wife, teacher Laura Clark Armistead. John and Laura took exquisite care of each other for 43 years, sharing a life of service to their neighbors, friends, and family. Whether it was shoveling a sidewalk, fixing a broken vacuum cleaner, or preparing a nourishing meal, John and Laura were always eager to help. They spent their final years at Bethany Village and cherished the extraordinary community there.
John is survived by his daughter, Sharla Lynette and his siblings, Gayle Byerly, Elise Hancock, Thomas Armistead, and William Armistead, as well as several nieces and nephews. His youngest sister, Thaniel, predeceased him.
Services will be held at the convenience of the family. Burial will be in Hope Cemetery, Corning, NY. Instead of flowers, donations may be made to Bethany Village at www.bethany-village.org.
