Joanne M. Sofia, 87, a longtime resident of Corning, NY and recently residing in Flagstaff, Arizona, passed away peacefully with her family beside her on Sunday, June 20, 2021.
Joanne was born to Sebastian and Pearl (Miller) Rocco on November 15, 1933 in Latrobe, Pennsylvania.
Anthony J. Sofia and Joanne were married at St. Vincent de Paul Church in 1953 and would have celebrated sixty eight years of marriage on June 27th, 2021.
She retired from Corning City Hall as secretary for the Mayor's Office. Previous occupations include; bank teller at Lincoln First Bank and the Parish Secretary at St Vincent’s.
During her lifetime she was a member of All Saints Parish, past President of the Catholic Action Society, a member of St. Vincent's School Board and past Founder and Director of the Kinship Group Home in Perkinsville, NY.
Joanne is survived by her loving husband of 67 years, Anthony J. Sofia of Flagstaff, AZ; son, Joseph (Pamela) Sofia of Dove Canyon, CA, daughters, Kathy Sando and Marybeth Loden both of Flagstaff, AZ; sister, Mona Lucas of Virginia Beach, VA; brother-in-law, Michael Carapella of Addison, special family friend, Christy Mendoza and several nieces and nephews. She leaves as her legacy four grandchildren; John (Ashley) Sando, Gregory (Brooke) Sando, Joseph Sofia Jr. and Evan Sofia and three great grandchildren. She was predeceased by her sister Rita Wass, her parents Pearl and Sebastian, mother-in-law Catherine Carapella, brother and sister-in-law Mark and Eileen Sofia. She does however leave behind many close friends and their enduring friendships.
A Memorial service and celebration of Joanne’s life will be held at 9:00 a.m. on October 8, 2021 at St. Mary's Church, Corning.
The family asks that in lieu of flowers, any donations be made in her name to the Corning Chapter of the American Red Cross Blood Bank where she served as a long tenured volunteer.
