James M. Mattison
October 14th, 1946 ~ April 8th, 2026 (age 79)
James “Jim” Mattison passed away on April 8th, 2026, at Robert Packer Hospital, in Sayre, Pennsylvania. He was born on October 14th, 1946, in Stamford, Connecticut, to John Mattison and Ruth (Rehn) Mattison. He spent his first three years in Connecticut, before moving to Corning, New York in 1949. He would spend the next 76 years living in the Village of South Corning. He was a home body and loved his village. He was well known in the community.
James met his wife, Contance (Mosher) Mattison, in 1985, and married her on March 18th, 1989. She pre-deceased him in 2018. He is survived by his son, Edward Mattison (Annette), of Corning, New York, his sister Kathy Bartholow (Clay) of Roseville, Minnesota, his brother John Mattison of Yorktown, Virginia, his four grandchildren (Cassandra Reynolds (Cody), Corrina Foley (Chris), Arianna Mattison, Dalila Mattison), and his four great grandchildren (Raelyn, Henry, Kyson, Allie). James is also survived by his spouse’s sister Beverly McCauley (Mosher), her children William Torrence, Christine Allwood, Diane Leonard, as well as her many grandchildren. James had a special friend & caregiver in Beth Squire.
James spent most of his working years in the laundry business, starting at his parents’ business, the South Corning Laundry, as a teen. Then he worked for more than 25 years as the Laundry Supervisor at Camp Monterey New York State Prison Facility. He loved the outdoors and spent many years camping, hiking, gardening, and sitting around the fire ring in the back yard. He also loved reading, watching the news, and watching old movies from his easy chair. James was an avid New York Yankees fan who attended many games and talked about the team constantly. James was a history buff, earning degrees in American History from CCC, Elmira College, and SUNY Brockport. He was a staunch supporter of the military, closely following the 30-year Army career of his son, Colonel Edward Mattison. He especially loved West Point and all its military history and pageantry.
James was tough, gruff, resilient, and physically strong. He was “old school”, a throwback to previous generations. He proudly stated that he lived 80 years and never touched a computer. He fought hard against many medical conditions in the past five years and served as an inspiration to many. He will be missed greatly by his family!
