Herbert Lucas Obituary

With great sadness we announce the passing of the pillar of our family, Herbert Andrew Lucas, on April 3, 2024. Herb was born September 7th, 1934 the son of John and Olive Walt Lucas in the Town of Barton, NY.

His early years nurtured by his aunt Pearl Talada until the remarrying of his father to Ella Snyder (Lucas) whom he called his forever mom. His early years in school were spent on River Road in South Corning. His school teacher, Mrs. Morrison of the former Morrison Turkey Farm, would have him go to school early and get the wood fire started. He believed in the School of Hard Knocks and would help any of his family if they were willing to help themselves. After attending Addison High School he went to work in the Painted Post Ingersoll Rand before leaving to join the construction company of Smith Langlin and McLoughlin. There he began his stellar career as a sheetrock installer and finisher. His talent was known throughout the area where his textured ceilings have been a focal point in hundreds of homes in the Steuben County and Big Flats area. His sixty years of work culminated in Yates County where he built his dream house on the shores of Seneca Lake. This is where the family has shared years of memories. With time to spare, his desire to help others found him volunteering for Yates County Habitat for Humanity for nearly 30 years. His love of fishing and hunting led him to many hours on the water and in the woods.

Herb helped raise the boys from his first marriage and later met and married the love of his life, Suzanne VanDusan King. With her five young children their blended family spent 48 years together.

Herb leaves his wife Suzanne, children Jeffery Lucas, Wesley Lucas, Michelle (Kerry) Fuller, Claude King, Lisa Beach, Kristen (Tom) Cleveland, Stephanie (Marvin) Cleveland and Debria Lucas (Dave Gilmore), sister Joyce Harrison and Sarah (Jerry) Cibelli, 14 grandchildren, 19 great grandchildren and 1 great great granddaughter, many beloved nephews, nieces and cousins. In addition to his parents, Herb was predeceased by his son Joel Lucas, sister and brother-in-law Ruth and Andy Hall, brother and sister-in-law Dick and Clara May Andrews, “cuz” Wesley and Doris Talada, He cherished the time spent with friends and classmates.
