Francis J. Chambers Obituary

Francis "Fran" J. Chambers, age 88, was a lifelong resident of Corning, New York, passed away on

Wednesday, January 22, 2025, at the WellSpan Chambersburg Hospital in Pennsylvania.

Born with a strong work ethic, Fran started his professional life at a young age with the Erie Railroad before finding his home at Corning Glass Works. His commitment to personal growth and professional development was evident in his pursuit of an Electrical apprenticeship later in his career. He began his career in the recreation department and worked his way up through various roles, including manager of the steel room and ultimately as an electrician.  Fran leaves behind a legacy of hard work and dedication, having spent 42 years with Corning Glass Works before retiring in 1991.

With his own two hands Fran built his own home along with several barns on his farm.  Farming, particularly Angus cattle was always close to his heart.  He enjoyed fishing.  In his spare time, he took his family fishing, often on Hemlock Lake.

Fran is survived by his loving wife, Linda Van Dusen Chambers of Corning, NY, and his children, Frank J Chambers of Shippensburg, PA, and Kathleen Chambers (Joseph) Matus of Huntsville, AL.  He will be fondly remembered by his grandchildren Curtis John Chambers, Kevin James Chambers, Mary Katherine Matus (David) Greenberg, and Laura Beth Matus. Fran also leaves behind his son-in-law Joseph Matus, sister-in-law Gretchen Bacon and brother-in-law Edward Mikulski and brother-in-law William VanDusen.

Fran will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and all who knew him. His life was a testament to the values of hard work, continuous learning, and finding joy in nature’s simple pleasures.

The family will receive friends at Acly-Stover Funeral Home, 327 E. 2nd St., Corning, NY on February 22, 2025, from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m.  A celebration of Fran’s life will follow at 11:00 a.m. with Pastor Richard Hurd Officiating.  The family invites you to a luncheon following the celebration at The Center, 400 Park Ave., Corning, NY.

He will be laid to rest at Chemung Village Cemetery in Chemung, New York.
