Evelyn Winters Wood Obituary

Evelyn Winters Wood, a resident of Painted Post, New York for over 70 years, passed away on September 1, 2024 at the age of 101. She was born on July 8, 1923 in Midland Park, New Jersey to Morross and Marie Yonkers Winters and moved with her family to Hornell in 1932. During World War II, she worked for the Erie Lackawanna Railroad Accounting Bureau. On February 3, 1946, she married Kenneth Travis Wood, who was employed as a ceramic engineer at Corning Glass Works for 34 years. In addition to raising her family, Evelyn worked at the First Presbyterian Church in Corning, New York as a part-time secretary and as the financial secretary. The Director of the Graduate Center at the College Center of the Finger Lakes in Corning from 1965-1974, she then became the Executive Director of the College Center from 1974-1980. After her retirement in 1980, she and Ken traveled widely in the United States and Canada, mostly to visit friends and family.

Equally active as a volunteer, she offered her time to Corning Hospital Chapter CC, the American Red Cross, and the Girl Scouts. She was a trustee for the First Presbyterian Church and sang alto in the choir there for over 60 years, as well as in the Corning Philharmonic Chorus. She was a member of the Corning Country Club 18-hole women’s golf league for 30 years and volunteered at the annual LPGA tournament with her husband for 22 years. Additionally, she was an avid bridge player, a great cook and gardener, and an insatiable reader.

Evelyn is survived by her daughters Debby Lawson and Susan Mills (David), her grandchildren Kate Lawson (Matt Gilmore), Peter Lawson (Tasha), and AJ Mills, and her sister, Jean Emery, as well many nieces, nephews and cousins. She was predeceased by her parents, her husband, Ken, and her older sister, Dorothy. She was an amazing and supportive woman, someone to look up to and admire, and she loved her family deeply.
