Elsie Hills Obituary

Horseheads, NY - Elsie Louise Hills, 81, formerly of Painted Post, passed away on Monday, December 11, 2017, at Elcor Nursing Home where she had been a resident for the past 6 years. She was the only daughter of Sidney Burdette Brouwere and Helen Bixby Brouwere.

Elsie was a lifelong resident of the Corning area. She retired 19 years ago from the New York State Department of Labor where she worked as a clerk in the unemployment division. Prior to that she was employed at The Corning Building Company and WT Grants.

Elsie was predeceased by her parents, and beloved nephew David Lee Brouwere, and infant great-nephew Greyson Alfred Guzylak.

She is survived by her two brothers, Richard Brouwere Sr. of Addison, and Thomas (Karen) Brouwere of Painted Post.
Elsie leaves behind five nephews Richard (Peggy) Brouwere Jr., Jonathan (Chris) Brouwere, Michael Brouwere, Scott (Carla Welsh) Brouwere, Trapper Brouwere, and three nieces Megan (Kevin) Guzylak, Jessica (Chad) Radka, Cassandra (Kyle) Myers. Elsie had many great nieces and nephews whom she loved with all her heart and enjoyed spending time with.

For years, her passion was planning a yearly expedition with her mom, and cousins Irene Bixby and Mary Travis, and in later years with her very good friend Lynda Peterson. They enjoyed traveling to Branson, Nashville, West Virginia and especially Lancaster Pennsylvania's Amish country. Elsie had a wonderful love of music, and she taught herself to play the accordion, guitar, organ and piano. She loved listening to country music and even dabbled in writing her own songs. If there was a country music show within traveling distance, you could be sure that Elsie was in the audience.

Elsie's favorite time of year was Christmas, and she loved to decorate and always had a family party where she served homemade ziti and potato candy. She would play the organ and her accordion, and loved to watch the children open their gifts.

Elsie's family would like to say a huge Thank you to the nurses, and all the staff at Elcor Nursing Home in Horseheads for the excellent care and love they have given to her.

Arrangements are being handled by Acly-Stover Funeral Home. There will be no calling hours. A celebration and remembrance of her life will be held at the Riverside Village Hall on Saturday, January 13, 2018, from 1-4 pm.
