Donald D. Miller passed on February 1, 2024, at the age of eighty-seven in Corning Hospital after an extended illness. Don was born May 11, 1936, to Harry and Anna (Hopkins) Miller, in Corning NY.
He graduated from Northside Highschool in Corning where he met and married his loving wife of 65 years, Nora (Overstrom) Miller, in 1958. Donald served in the United States Army for 2 years, he was discharged as a specialist in 1956. He graduated from Alfred State College in 1959. Don pursued his career as a Quality Inspection Engineer for laminated beams with the American Plywood Association and together he and Nora moved from coast to coast growing their family with his children being born in New Jersey, California, and South Carolina. He and Nora also enjoyed traveling together around the world including Spain, Italy, Korea, and Norway.
Don and Nora moved back to the area in 1968 and settled in Savona NY. He started E&D Contractors and Formica Company with his brother remodeling and restoring several homes before and after the 1972 flood. Still to this day kitchens around Corning have Formica counters installed and touched by Don’s hands. In 1980 Don accepted the position of Facilities Manager at Watson Homestead in Painted Post, NY. He was a people person and loved his job. He got to meet people from all over the world and made so many friends while working there until he retired in 1998. After his retirement Don did not slow down, he continued to work for both the Town of Corning and the Town of Caton as a code enforcement officer. He was Mason and an active member of the Shriners, transporting children to Shiner hospitals was one of his joys. Don was an Eagle scout and a scout master for the Boy Scouts of America spending summers with his troops at Camp Gorton. He was a volunteer fireman for the Savona Fire Department and an active member of the South Corning Methodist Church.
Don was a skilled craftsman and took care and pride in his workmanship. The home they moved to after he retired was an example from handcrafted crown moldings to the fireplace wall in the living room. One of his favorite past times of late was putting puzzles together, continuing to assemble things to the end. He was a good husband, father, and grandfather. Don always had a smile and a good joke to share with everyone. He touched many lives during his time with us and he will be dearly missed.
Don is survived by his loving wife of 65 years, Nora (Overstrom) Miller and his two children, DuWayne Miller, and Kathy (Sean) Corcoran, four grandchildren, Jennifer (Able) Ornelos, Kimberly (Arvle) Ramos, Benjamin (April) Miller, and Hanna Corcoran, and four great grandchildren, Mia Ventura and Liam Ornelos, and Nyla and Jacob Ramos.
Don was predeceased by his mother Anna, father Harry, 1st son Warren Todd, and brother Elwin Miller.
The family will receive friends at Acly-Stover Funeral Home on Tuesday, February 6, 2024, from 4-7 p.m. Funeral services will follow at 7:00 p.m. Burial will be in Coopers Cemetery, Coopers Plains, NY.
