Daryl Lee Dates Obituary

 

Daryl Lee Dates passed away on Monday, March 24th, 2025 at the age of 81.  He was born May 7th, 1943 to James and Doris (Thomas) Dates and grew up in Caton, NY with this brothers, Tom and Dale.  Daryl graduated from Corning Free Academy in 1962 and served in the New York National Guard. Daryl started his career with Corning Glass Works in 1965.  In 1972, he graduated from Corning Community College with an Associate of Applied Science in Mechanical Technology.  In 1985, Daryl graduated from Rochester Institute of Technology with a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering Technology.  Daryl worked as a Senior Project Technician for Corning Incorporated until his retirement.

On September 3rd, 1965, Daryl married Diana Marie Decker in Corning, NY.  Later they moved to the Town of Thurston, where they would reside for nearly 50 years, raising their three children and enjoying time with their grandchildren.  Daryl was very supportive of his wife Diana’s artistic talents and attended many arts and craft shows in the area alongside her.  They were married 52 years before her passing in 2018.

Daryl will be fondly remembered for his love of genealogy, photography, and appreciated a good science fiction movie.  Daryl enjoyed history, exploring new technology, along with tinkering with the latest gadget. Daryl taught many of his grandchildren how to play the game chess and passed along his interest in computers.

Daryl was proceeded in death by his wife Diana, his parents, his brother and sister-in-law Thomas and Beverly Dates. Daryl is survived by his brother Dale (Stephanie) Dates, sister-in-law and brother-in-law Barbara (Jack) Spaulding, and will be greatly missed by his three children: Cynthia (Mark) Brandt, Elizabeth (John) Forenz and D.J. (Rachel) Dates as well as 13 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at Acly-Stover Funeral Home in Corning, NY on Saturday, May 10th, 2025 at 10 am.  The family will hold a private burial service at a later date.  Memorial donations can be made in Daryl’s name to the Victory Highway Wesleyan Church where Daryl and Diana were members or organizations that support veterans.
