Curtis W. Cooper Obituary

Curtis Cooper, Sr., of Elmira, New York, peacefully entered the presence of his Lord and Savior at his home on June 17, 2026.

Born on August 6, 1956, in Goshen, New York, Curtis was the son of Norman Cooper Sr.  and Dorothy (Hunter) Nelson.

Throughout his life Curtis was a kind man with quiet strength, and deep devotion to his family.  He was a cherished husband, father, grandfather, son, brother, uncle, and friend whose kindness and steady presence touched many lives.

SSGT Cooper proudly served in the United States Army, honoring his country with courage, dedication, and integrity. Following his military service, he devoted 20 years as a correctional officer with the Federal Bureau of Prisons. He earned the respect of colleagues and those he served, with commitment, professionalism, and compassion. This earned him several awards including Officer of the Year in 1988 and 2009. Upon retirement, he received a letter of congratulations for 40 years of Federal service from President Barrack Obama.

He was preceded in death by his father Norman Cooper Sr., stepfather William Nelson and his brothers, Norman Cooper Jr., Mark Nelson, and John (Johnnie) Mann.

Curtis treasured his family. Married 47 years, he honored God by being, “…joined unto his wife, and the two shall become one flesh.” (Eph.5:31) He leaves behind his beloved wife, Rhonda (Monroe) Cooper; mother; Dorothy (Hunter) Nelson; sons; Curtis Jr, Brad, Michael, and his sister Roxanne (Julius) Lambright. He found great joy in his grandchildren: Zanaya, Jizae, Shamya, Kaleah, Curtis III, Avianna, and great-grandson: Kasir, and several nieces and nephews.  Curtis enjoyed family gatherings, laughter, music, and his classic car.

Though our hearts are saddened by his passing, we take comfort in knowing that Curtis has been welcomed into eternal peace. His legacy of faith, honor, service, strength, and love will continue to shine brightly through the lives he touched.  He will be forever loved, forever remembered, and forever missed.
